It never ceases to amaze me how many new gadgets and supplements still seem to find their way into the fitness industry promising some miraculous easy way to lose weight.  From Cortisol, to Trim Spa, to the energy bracelets, which actually allow you to lose weight just by wearing them!  Sound too good to be true?  Well, it is.  While some of these products may produce short term weight loss, almost everyone who uses them ends up being depressed and upset because they gain their weight right back.  The truth is, we, the American public, are being lied to!  These fraudulent companies thrive on taking money from the unsuspecting public!  And what makes it even worse is that they know that their product is not going to work long term.  So many Americans are looking for an easy fix- magic in a bottle.  The sad truth is that no such thing exists.  There is only one sure fire way to achieve weight loss and fitness goals.  A system that has worked time and again and been proven time and again.  One word- SYNERGY!

The concept of SYNERGY was developed by respected fitness professional, and one of my mentors, Phil Kaplan.  I  have earned a great respect for Phil and his work, because he enforces the only system that has worked consistently time and again.  So what exactly is SYNERGY?  Well, it consists of three different concepts:  proper nutrition, moderate aerobic exercise, and a concern for muscle.  It is these three ideals that consistently lead to long- term weight loss and on- going fitness gains.  In my new seminar, DISCOVERING YOUR SECRET POWER:  THE ANSWERS TO LONG- TERM, EFFECTIVE WEIGHT LOSS!, I discuss the value of SYNERGY at length.

So, allow me to explain each of these three concepts.  What is proper nutrition?  I have discussed nutrition in several past newsletters, so I won’t go into great detail.  But it’s important to understand that if we are to achieve results, we must try to speed our metabolism, that is, the rate at which our bodies burn through food.  We can do this by eating smaller meals every three to four hours.  Each meal we eat should consist of a lean protein, a starch carbohydrate, and a fibrous carbohydrate.  An example would be a chicken breast, baked potato, and asparagus.  Each of these foods should be relatively close in portion size- about the palm of your hand.  If this kind of eating plan is followed, you can rest assured that your blood sugar will be stabilized and that your body will be in an optimal fat burning zone.  This type of eating plan should be followed for six days.  On the seventh day, YOU GET TO CHEAT!  This means you can eat whatever you want all day long!  The cheat day helps people to adhere to the strict eating plan without allowing metabolism to suffer.  But there’s only one catch- there’s only one cheat day per week!

And then there comes the subject of exercise.  This is where many people get scared and run.  I hate to bring bad news, but the truth of the matter is, EXERCISE IS NOT AN OPTION, IT’S A MUST!  In order to burn fat, we must move our bodies.  And that is where aerobic exercise comes into the picture.  Aerobic exercise allows us to burn a significant amount of calories, and also provides us with a great many health benefits at the same time.  It can also play a key role in weight loss/ fat loss.  But there is one key thing to remember here:  In order to optimize weight loss, aerobic exercise must be performed after resistance training.

Resistance training would constitute the “concern for muscle” category of SYNERGY.  Muscles are the site in the body where fat is burned.  Therefore, when we challenge our muscles with resistance training, we are improving and enhancing our fat burning capability.  However, if we were to do aerobic exercise first, we would burn up all of our stored fuel (glycogen), and our  bodies would have to resort to using our own muscle tissue for fuel, therefore destroying our fat burning capability!  If, however, we were to do aerobic exercise after resistance training, our bodies would turn to fat as the primary fuel source.  Pretty cool, huh?

Resistance training seems to scare some people away.  I  won’t lie to you, it is not easy work.  But, believe me, the payoff is well  worth it.  Not only are you increasing your body’s fat burning capability, but you are also building strength, toning and defining your muscles and increasing your energy levels beyond what you could possibly imagine.  Oh, and of course there are the many health benefits that go along with it too!

So regardless of what you see on the television or read in the magazines, I hope I have convinced you by now that there is only one tried and true method that works for weight loss and fitness  goals- SYNERGY:  proper nutrition, moderate aerobic exercise, and a concern for muscle.  If you follow these concepts, you cannot fail!
